QUESTIONING FAITH

“Mom!”

“Yes?”

“Are you going to Faith’s show tonight?”

“I can’t, Kaylee—not tonight.”

“Why not?”

“Because I promised your brother I’d take him to the movies.”

“The movies? That’s so lame.”

“I can drop you off if your mother can pick you up.”

“Faith will bring me home.”

“Is that so?”

“Yeah. She said she would. Can I? Deb and Steph want to go. Come on, it won’t be late. Her set is at like eight or something.”

“Or something?”

“Mom—”

“I’ll call Faith.”

“I already talked to Faith when I was at Mom’s.”

“You what?”

“Well, she was there when I was there. She offered to give me a ride home if you weren’t going.”

“I haven’t agreed to let you go yet.”

“Mom—”

“Don’t, Mom me, Kaylee. I thought that you were going over to Deb’s house this weekend?”

“Yeah, well, the thing is Deb’s parents are sort of away.”

I love my daughter. Most of the time she’s straight with me and responsible. I get the feeling there is a scheme I don’t know about.

“You said I could have people over this weekend,” Kaylee reminds me.

“I did. That was before you told me that you had decided to stay at a friend’s.”

“Yeah, but that was before Mrs. Aventi said Deb couldn’t have any friends over.”

“Let me see if I have this correct—you and Deb decided to stay at Deb’s—”

“And Steph.”

“Before you asked Deb’s parents?”

Kaylee shrugs.

“Oh, no—You three intended to stay there without Deb’s parents and go to that concert without telling any of us.”

“Deb’s older sister will be there. She’s twenty.”

“That’s not the point and you know it.”

“Mom, I would’ve told you about Faith’s show.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” Kaylee rolls her eyes. “She’s like your girlfriend. Like she wouldn’t tell you.”

Did I hear that right? “Faith is not my girlfriend , Kaylee. Where on earth did you get that idea?”

“Seriously, Mom?”

“I am serious.”

“You get all googly eyed when she’s around.”

“What are you talking about?”

“And, she’s all like, ‘Hi, Sadie.” Kaylee bats her eyelashes.

I can’t help but laugh. “We’re friends.”

Kaylee puts her hand on her hip. “Do you mean your friend that you went away to New York and shared your hotel with her?”

“Kaylee!”

“What?”

I huff. “Faith and I are not a couple.”

“If you say so.”

“I do. How did this become about me?”

“You said I wouldn’t tell you about the show. I’m not stupid, Mom. Faith would totally tell you. I’d be caught in like ten seconds.”

I don’t know whether I am amused, annoyed, or dismayed by this conversation. Kaylee intended to be less than truthful with me about her plans. That much is clear. And, she thinks I am involved with Faith. By the expression on her face, she’s jumped to the conclusion that Faith and I have had sex. I don’t know where to begin with any of this.

“Earth to Mom.”

“What did you say?”

“Can Deb and Steph come here? Faith will drop us off. She said she would.”

I stare at my daughter.

“You’ll get to see her.”

I chuckle. I could see Faith almost any time I wanted. All I would have to do is call her. We’ve talked once in the week since New York—only once.
